SuperShuttle is a ground transportation service specializing in transporting travelers to and from airports and hotels. Read this scenario and suggest solutions for SuperShuttle management.
Four guests are standing outside a hotel awaiting their pre-arranged/pre-paid 1:15pm shuttle (we'll call this Shuttle 1) to the airport. At 1:45pm, a shuttle arrives, but it's not their shuttle. Let's call it Shuttle 2. Shuttle 2 is picking up 5 other guests at 1:50pm for rides to the airport as arranged. Shuttle 2 DOES have room to accommodate the four guest waiting on Shuttle 1.
1. Should SuperShuttle allow the guests awaiting Shuttle 1 to ride to the airport, OR should the guests continue to wait on Shuttle 1 (which is 20 minutes away)? Explain.
2. Drivers are paid according to how many passengers are in the shuttle. Should the Shuttle 2 driver get paid for ALL NINE passengers while the driver of Shuttle 1 gets nothing? What factors might you consider in making this decision.
3. If Shuttle 1 driver was lated due to no fault of his own, should he lose those potential earnings? Is that fair? Is it fair for the Shuttle 2 driver NOT to be paid for the four extra passengers she transported to the airport?
